I now have 3 very different books on pop-ups, as I wanted to set it up as a Middle School activity for kids to make Christmas cards during our Home base time (30 minutes, every day). What I write is based on a Not-An-Art-Teacher trying to figure out how to do this, and then translate it into something teachable to 11-12 year old kids in groups of 20 or so.It is a beautiful book, with gorgeous pictures, as well as well done and nicely photographed steps of instruction. This book starts off with a look at books with movable parts, throughout Western European history. It goes through several types, and shows you pictures of these historical objects. I found myself fascinated with the descriptions as well as the pictures - it is very well done, and takes up 26 pages of this 12x9.5" book. P33-41 covers Materials, Tools, & Techniques. There are 2 pages of the different types of paper & their uses, plus some... I have been making cards of all types for nearly 3 years and I found this book WAYYYYYYY over my head. There are indeed lots of photographs, and the instructions are fairly clear, but the complexity of even the easiest cards is daunting and I found the cards full of artwork I was unable to reproduce and the designs much too specific to be adapted to any other occasion or design. It is a coffee-table-type book--heavy, colorful, expensive, pretty to look at and entertaining in its history and background sections, but unless you are a very experienced ARTIST (not just a crafter) BEWARE of this super-challenging book. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful ![]() Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: The Practical Step-by-Step Guide to Making Pop-Ups & Novelty Cards: A how-to guide to the art of paper engineering, featuring over 100 techniques and ... 1000 fantastic photographs and illustrations (Hardcover) This is a quality book, filled with good information and helpful photographs on how to make creative cards. However, it lacks one key ingredient for those interested in making the same projects found in the book. You are given detailed step by step instructions, plus photographs to follow along with, but the book does not include diagrams or stencils of the complex cut-outs that are required for many of the cards to work. Surely this is an oversight, as many readers of this book would be expecting at least 'some' guidance on how to cut the paper correctly. You do see photos of the cut out paper and card, however it is difficult to know the right perspective and size in order to try and cut it out yourself. The book offers some great ideas, and certainly provides some good tips for creating cards, but don't plan on making the cards found in the book without some further help with the diagrams. Imagine how much more appealing the book would be... Read more |
