This review is from: Sewing in a Straight Line: Quick and Crafty Projects You Can Make by Simply Sewing Straight (Paperback) It's been only a few months since I started sewing and in this little time I've "hoarded" a silly amount of sewing books that are meant for more experienced sewers. I got my copy of "sewing in a straight line" because the projects seemed perfect for my current sewing skills. I have to say I love it! The projects are super cute and it's nice to see modern home sewing projects for once. I love the fact that it features a quilting project which I've also been curious to learn about. I would strongly recommend it to beginner sewers. This would make a terrific gift paired with a sewing machine. However, I was thrilled to crack the cover and see really current projects that would be great finished as directed - or taken whatever direction you wanted to go. I like that the projects are simple, but look cool and cover a smattering of project types from clothes and accessories to home to gifts. And everything relies on your own measurements - so not only could you easily adjust things to be however big or small you wanted, the clothes can be made for anyone, which is refreshing. This weekend, I'm going to put aside the aforementioned quilt to make the purse - with a few modifications to suit my style. That's one of the things I like the most - I feel like this book is a great jumping off point for many ideas and every project leaves a lot of room for you to customize however you like. Im nervous to start with patterns and this book is great because you cut your own! She gives you the dimensions to cut and you piece them together, no tissue paper! There is variety too with lots of home dec projects and baby projects. This book makes sewing seem a little easier! It thoroughly explains each project in easy to understand terms. I like how they tell you exactly what gauge wire you need including the riveting wire. Unfortunately not all books are like this one. I have run into several that had great projects and they would say sterling wire but they wouldn't say what gauge you needed to make the project or even worse they would show you beautiful projects and they will say for instance use round or square lamp work beads but they wouldn't tell you where they got them at. Not in this book. This book tells you every step of the way what gauge wire you need and the tools needed and at the back of the book it tells you a list of suppliers. One of my favorite aspects of the DVD is that it has a bonus project on it that isn't in the book. Lisa Niven Kelly spoke very clearly and the DVD was done perfect. It showed her hands as she was doing the work. What was nice was that when she made a mistake she would tell you what to... This book has by far the best layout and design of any quilt book I've seen (and I own hundreds). The quilts look complicated but they really aren't - and if you're nervous, start with one of the "easy" ones at the front of the book. Each quilt pattern is given in multiple sizes (Wall through to Queen) with a beautiful photo and clear illustrations and text, as well as clear cutting intructions and a table which makes it easy to see how many pieces to cut. The authors encourage you to experiment, and show how each quilt could look in other colour choices. There's even hints on catching any potential design disasters before they happen. This is my new favourite quilt book and I would recommend it for ANYONE - even advanced quilters will find new and challenging design opportunities sparked by this book. I can not believe it, I loved this book WAY more then the Denyse book (which I gave 2 stars). The Modern Quilt Workship is just a wealth of information. Great quilting tips, and just really neat projects with great instructions. I started quilting in december, taught myself, having never used a sewing machine before. I am very paticular and like very clear insutrctions. This book is GREAT, with totally ultra hip patterns to boot :) I learned stuff just skimming this book when it first arrived.
